Golf Club - how many clubs do you need to play golf?

Golf club - How many Golf Clubs do you need to play golf is like asking the question ‘how long is a piece of string’. It is said that Tiger Woods was made to play round after round of golf by his father with two clubs, an iron and a putter. There are many ‘how to play golf’ books that recommend that you take out and play a round of golf with just one club and a putter.

The idea of playing with one club is not to reduce your handicap, although in some cases that’s exactly what will happen, the idea is that you will get to know that golf club inside out. You’ll learn all its capabilities, how it plays, long shots, short chips, different grips and any fears you may have conceived from passed experience will disappear. It won’t happen on the first hole, it may not happen after eighteen holes, but you keep playing with that one golf club until you have mastered it, then you can move onto the next until you have mastered the set.

How many Golf Clubs you can use or in fact carry in your golf bag is governed by the R&A, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, it states that you can carry up to 14 golf clubs.

The rule of thumb is that you carry three woods (1,3 and 5), eight irons (3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and a PW - pitching wedge)and a putter. That is twelve clubs which means that you can carry two speciality clubs. Most people will carry a sand wedge for when they land in a bunker.

The last club could be another wood or if you are right handed a left handed iron golf club or visa versa if you are left handed.

The penalty for carrying more than fourteen clubs was until 2009 two shots per hole but that was change to a maximum of four shots by the R&A. However if you discovered that you carried more than fourteen golf clubs in a competition after you signed your score card then you will be disqualified for signing an incorrect card.
