Putters

Everyone will tell you that your putter is the most important golf club in your bag. Why are putters so important? Because you will use your putter more than any other golf club during the course of a round of golf. Unless you are an exceptionally good putter you will probably use the putter twice on each hole. On an 18 hole round that will cost you 36 strokes. If you can reduce the amount of puts you take on the green by just 25% you will save 9 strokes.

There are no good or bad putters; a putter is only as good as the golfer using it. When purchasing a putter purchase the putter that feels right for you.

Putters come in three main styles of club head and there are hundreds of variations of each style. The main three styles of putters are; the Blade, the Cavity and the Mallet.

You may not know it but everyone knows the Blade putter and nearly everyone at one time or another has used a Blade putter. It is the most traditional of putters, if you’ve ever played a game of crazy golf the putter they give you is a traditional Blade putter.

The Cavity putter is a Blade putter with some of the back hollowed out, this in theory gives a larger sweet spot to hit the golf ball. At the end of the day it has to feel right to you, and you’ll only know this by using it, the sweet spot, no matter how big it is won’t help you hole the ball if the putter doesn’t fit right in your hand.

The third putter style is the Mallet putter. A bird’s eye view of a Mallet putter resembles a D shape. The Mallet putter has become popular lately with the advent of inserting discs or markers on the top of the D to help centre your put.

Along with the three styles of putters there are various shaft lengths attached to the putters from short to broom handle length. Again the length of the shaft depends on you and the way you swing the putter. The least amount of wobble when playing the putting stroke the more accurate you should be.
